Background of Study Group

About DDSSG

The Data-Driven Society Study Group (DDSSG) is a group that studies digitization and digital society from a sociological standpoint.

This study group is a predecessor of the sociological theory study group that we have been conducting continuously monthly since around 2009. The study group has conducted a session at the JSS (Japan Sociological Society) annual congresses from FY2011 through FY2019.

Through these activities, we have solidified our research concept of linking research on ICT and other recent technological innovations with theoretical innovations in sociology and have been able to obtain research funding from FY2020 to FY2022 based on this study group. And from addressing this research issue, this study group was established.

The interest of this study group is not in how to digitize society or how to make it more convenient. What this study group focuses on is how new technologies will change the social world and how they will create new ways of thinking (interpretive frameworks) within society. In other words, the target of this study group is not the technology itself, but rather society.

In March 2023, the name of the study group was changed to the Data-Driven Society Study Group and a new website was open to clearly show the above ideas.
